Apple OSX 10.9 – Rumored to be Called ‘Lynx’

Ever since OS X was released in 2001, Apple have used the names of big cats to give it a codename.  We have seen, Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion and the current version Mountain Lion (10.8).  Which leaves only one version of Mac OS X to go (10.9).

Apple currently has two unused cat names trademarked, Lynx and Cougar.  However, Cougar is really another name for a Mountain Lion, so this only leaves Lynx as the likely candidate.  The website Applescoop.com is stated as having information from an internal Apple source, who has said they have had sight of internal paperwork finalizing the name of the up-coming operating system.

If Apple sticks to its traditional timing of unveiling new operating systems, we can expect a public viewing at its Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco in June 2013.  We may even see early preview versions appearing in the first quarter of 2013.

There is little known about what features are expected in version 10.9.  It is however rumored that they will integrate Siri and Maps to the new build, which will follow Apple’s continuing theme of bringing more iOS features to its Operating System.  It is believed that the Maps integration will simply be an API available to developers to integrate it to their applications.  (I only hope they make a better version this time around and not have a repeat of the iPhone and iPad debacle).

If you have read many of the articles I have posted on this here blog, you will know that I have been a fan of Apple for many years and really love the quality of their products.  I have only recently purchased a new MacBook Air laptop, and was not disappointed with its quality and abilities.  I still stand by what I have said for these many years, I will never go back to a Windows based machine.

However, Apple have recently released iOS6, their latest iteration of their ever popular operating system for iPhone and iPad.  As part of this release they decided they would no longer use Google as the mapping solution on the iPhone and release a version of their own.
