PhotoStream #009: Vivid Sydney 2014

Hi folks and welcome to PhotoStream #009.  Sorry it has been a while since I last posted but I have been away working in other parts of Australia, but I still managed to take my camera with me on those trips and I will be posting some photos very soon (just don’t look at the date-stamps – because I am posting my latest ones first).

Finally An Opportunity to Sell Some of My Photographs…

For many years I have wanted to share my photography with the world and I currently do with the help of this blog, and 500px.com and alongside this I have wanted to possibly sell some of my creations, many of the photographs you have seen on this blog over the years are also available for sale through 500px.com, but I am yet to sell any.

Photography has always been hobby and I do it out of enjoyment not for financial gain, but it would be nice.  I have used my photography skills for over seven years helping a local photographer in my home town in the United Kingdom, but Landscape and Sunset Photography has always been my passion.

Since moving to Sydney, I have managed to get some quite dramatic pictures of several locations around New South Wales, and sharing them with you, my friends and family, the thought never entered my head that these photographs would get noticed by someone who runs his own Framing Business and wishes to print and sell prints of my Sydney Storm Photograph.

Storm-Rolling-in-Over-Sydney-Opera-House---Black-and-WhiteHe is yet to sell any, but he has said that he’s had some interest.

He also has it printed in Black and White, and Sepia and it is currently pride of place in the front of his window display.

ShopWindowDisplayIf you happen to see this post and are in the Sunderland area, head on over to Grays Framing, Sea Road, Sunderland and I am sure they will be able to help you out with what you need, even if it is not to buy a print of my photograph.

Batten Down The Hatches… You Never Know When That Storm is Going To Come Rolling Through!!!

Since moving to Sydney, I have found it a little difficult to get in the right place at the right time to try and get one of my trademark shots.

Every time I go to a new place, I always seem to come back with at least one Sunset shot, and my parents have always wondered if I ever take photographs of anything else… well… it just so happens I do, it was only because I was out and about on Saturday afternoon making a concerted effort to get into the right place at the right time to get a Sunset shot across the skies of Sydney Harbor Bridge and Sydney Opera House, only to be presented with storm clouds, so here are some photos from that day.  I will upload more when I have finished going through them and editing them.

Opps… Sorry Western Australia… Perth 21st Most Expensive Place to Live.

Ever since I looked at getting my Permanent Residency Visa to live and work in Australia, I had made one important restriction on the locations of Australia I would consider living in and not living in for a variety of reasons.  One such place I had considered a place I did not want to live was Perth, Western Australia.

Reason: I had spoken to several people in the UK, watched several television programs, read lots of websites  and this City was considered the primary destination for those wishing to emigrate from the UK and until a few days ago, I considered it one of the most expensive places to live in the world, let alone in Australasia!

Lighting Up The Night Sky… Photography Experiment.

I was sitting near our balcony watching a little television and keeping an eye on what was happening outside.  We had had quite a warm muggy day with very little sunshine, but as a result, we ended up with quite a spectacular thunder storm… or certainly spectacular by my standards, not something I had experienced when I was living in the UK.

At first glance it just appeared to be flashing with lightning above a very full sky of clouds, but no actual forks were making their way down to the ground.  Additionally to this, there was hardly any Thunder rumbles after the lightning and no rain.

Those of you who know me, my main area of photography has always been Landscapes and Sunsets, of which there have been many on this site.

But I thought I would do an experiment, I had never done storm photography before, but I had a problem.  Since moving 12,000 miles across the world to Australia, I had only brought over my Camera and Memory Cards and not my Tripod (way too heavy), and I haven’t yet gotten round to buying another one.

So, with the camera propped up on a box, and the lens propped up with an empty Diet Soda can, I started taking pictures of what was happening outside, only to get very light pictures because of the lightning above the clouds.  But after several attempts at 30 seconds a piece, I finally got one picture I am quite proud of considering I had never done this type of photography before.

So this is the result:

Well that’s it for this post, hope you like the photo, which has had a nice response on my 500px site.

Let me have your thoughts in the comments below.  Have you done this type of photography before, I would like to get tips and tricks to get more like this or is it trial and error.

Until next time.

Greatings from the land of Oz…

After one month in Australia I have finally gotten round to posting here again.  I just wanted to post a quick update on what is happening and what I have planned if you’re interested in reading about my new life in the land of Oz.

The last four weeks have been quite a roller-coaster of a time.  I don’t think I expected it to be easy but I didn’t expect to have such a hard time.
